WITH A RESCUE! Pittsburgh, PA (go Steelers, go Guinea Pigs): Pink eyed white (it appears) boar being dumped for fr33. He's one year old and very friendly. And the poor guy. There are a couple things wrong with his current habitat, if his picture is accurate.

His cage is too small; newspaper is inadequate bedding, and there is no hay to be seen. Can you give this boy a better home, a forever home?

NJ-North Jersey Guinea Pig and Hamster Rescue

Due to increased time commitments, I am no longer going to be able to update past entries of some of the larger rescues such as Have-A-Heart and NJGPHR. Once a week or so I will update the herd of the respective rescues.

The dear guineas I wrote about in the last NJGPR post now have photos. Happy day! Below these three are links to all the guineas presently in the rescue.

Max is a ten month old boar. His other half was recently adopted, so now Max is left all by his lonesome. He would be best paired with a submissive piggie, or one of his piggie pals he met in the rescue. And he would be best adopted to someone who appreciates his sweet face!

ADOPTED! Ignatius G. Pig, first off, wins my award for Best Name Ever. How many different ways did John Kennedy Toole describe obesity? He was an artist. As for Ignatius G. Pig, he is also amazing looking. He is two years old with a great big ol' beautiful white crest. He would make a good mate for a submissive piggie, or he could go home with another piggie from the rescue.

ADOPTED! Ziggy is such a fun looking guy. He is a golden agouti abby boy, and quite handsome at that. Sadly, his family had to give Ziggy up due to changing circumstances. He's a submissive boar, so he would do well matched with one of the dominant guineas out there who is a bit hard to find a mate for. Or, dear Ziggy could go home with one of his friends from the rescue.

LISTING EXPIRED. Taggy is a three year old gal near Fairfield, NY. She is a gray and white cutie, healthy, friendly, and sweet. Taggy is vocal and gentle. She comes with her cage, food bowls, toys, food, water bottle, and some guinea pig care books. This is all for a small adoption fee.

I really want to encourage this post on the grounds of Adopt a Senior Pet month. Even though that would be like giving a forty year old a discount at IHOP, but still. That is to say, guinea pigs can live up to nine years old with proper care.

Speaking of proper care, there are a couple of things in the Craigslist post I disagree with. The poster says Taggy would make a perfect first pet. This may be true, but ensure that you have an exotics or cavy savvy vet in your area. Fewer people specialize in guinea pigs than in cats and dogs, and so guinea pig owners often wind up being told they should put their pets to sleep when treatment could be done. This is obviously very difficult for all involved.

The poster also says Taggy would be a perfect companion for a young child. Here's an example of why I don't think that's true.

Guinea pigs are also not low maintenance, requiring only food, water, and a clean cage. They require unlimited hay, pellets, three servings daily of appropriate veggies, a large cage, daily floortime, daily lap time, weekly weighing, a companion, annual vet checks, etc. etc.

POST DELETED. Spring City (near Philadelphia), PA: Hard to make out what's going on here. A brown and white baby guinea girl (double check using the pup sexing page) who doesn't bite is being put up for adoption. She is very sweet and comes with her food bowl and cage.
